I was getting ready to leave for work this morning at 9:45, just as I was walking out the door, the telephone rang. "Hello, its your favorite daughter in Germany", Erin said. Then she went on to say that she could only talk for a minute. THEN she said that Robin's (her fiance) parents were on their way to Seattle. We knew that Robin's parents were in the United States. They have another son getting married to an American in Portland this weekend and we also knew that we were going to get to meet them while they were here. We thought that they would be traveling to see us after the wedding this weekend. Now all of a sudden they are coming today!
Panic does not begin to describe my feelings. Lee andI have been working working very long hours at the store with our sale and our entire home is completely in disarray. I keep telling myself that Germans are the best housekeepers in the world and I have never been too bothered by a little (lot) of clutter. How can we have company come stay with us when nothing is clean, nothing is in order and I don't know what to feed them?
I went into work, while Lee went to pick up Janna to come help with the emergency cleaning. By the time that I got to the store, I was so worked up that they turned me right around and sent me home. I stopped at Fred Meyer to pick up a couple flats of flowers. because lets face it, if I am going to entertain guests, my house has got to look cute.
The emergency cleaning was well underway by the time that I arrived. Janna had made beds and taken laundry to some hiding place.
Lee had the dishes done and was outside dealing with weed infested flower beds. I dusted everything at eye level and below. My dust bunnies had multiplied in corners like real bunnies.
We eventually wore out the volunteers, who went off to do other things. Then I got to plant the front planter and the deck. I am confident that I can cope with anything. including non English speaking future in laws dropping by with little notice, as long as I have some beautiful flowers where I can see them from my back windows. That's because I am getting my priorities back in line.
Flowers first, work ---well not today.
